PETROLEUM GEOLOGY OF LIBYA
Libya has the largest oil reserves in Africa and has already produced over 20 billion barrels
of oil, yet this book represents the first comprehensive account of the Petroleum Geology of Libya.
Drawing on an enormous amount of published data the book presents an up to date account of the
current state of oil exploration in Libya - both onshore and offshore.
The book is arranged in nine chapters. Chapter 1 deals with the history of oil exploration and
production in Libya. Chapter 2 outlines the plate tectonic evolution of North Africa and the
Mediterranean. Chapters 3, 4 and 5 cover the stratigraphy of the Palaeozoic, Mesozoic and Cainozoic.
Chapter 6 deals with the structural evolution and structural provinces of Libya. Chapter 7 covers
petroleum geochemistry. Chapter 8 is a review of seventeen major petroleum systems, and includes data
on reserves and details of the principal fields. The final chapter speculates on where the remaining
reserves might be located. The book contains an appendix on the transliteration of Arabic names and a
comprehensive bibliography.
